Six years after my exchange, I finally got a chance to return to Lyon, France to gather together with my dear French parents Pierre and Bernadette, my Austrian best friend Alex and French classmates.
Singapore has been gradually opening its border for inbound and outbound tourism since end 2021; after a 2-year travel pause, the residents are keen to fly and enjoy the air outside Singapore. I got a summer internship offer in February. Knowing that there will be some breaks before the start of the internship and school special term, I started contemplating about going to France to visit my French parents and Alex. Upon confirming where to live after I move out from school dormitory in May, I called Pierre and Bernadette to check their availability and booked the flight ticket immediately. I felt super excited and kept counting down ever since.
After my exchange ended in mid 2016, I have kept in touch with Pierre, Bernadette and Alex. We text and have video calls from time to time to share our news, happiness, sadness or worries in life (in French of course). We are so close that I don’t feel six years have already passed. Friendship means a lot to me and I’ve always wanted to visit them for a long time, but the travel plan could not happen due to my limited annual leaves and the pandemic.
After I told Pierre that I was going to study in Singapore last year, he said it was even better because Singapore was 4 hours closer to France than Taiwan and it was more convenient for me to travel. It turned out that he’s a prophet! I did departed from Singapore to France!
It was such a great joy to be able to stroll on the streets in Europe and taste great food after two years. I am also grateful that I could gather with my dear French parents and friends after years. As stated in my first blogpost subject, I was really really lucky to have met Pierre and Bernadette when I first came to France in 2015. Because of them, I have a family in France and get a sense of belonging in this culture.

After 14 hours from Singapore – Paris – Lyon, I finally met Pierre and Bernadette! |
A table!
My week in Lyon was quite chill with most time spent on the dining table with good food!
In the morning, I still kept my habit of eating an apple a day plus tasty French sweet breakfast, like brioches, baguette with jam, pain au chocolat, Lyonnais “brioches aux pralines roses” and ended with a cup of tea or milk. Such a great way to start a beautiful day.
Apprendre la cuisine! Let’s learn how to cook French cuisine!
Kitchen is still the realm of Pierre, and he is in charge of food preparation, cooking and dish washing. I grew some interests in cooking after the semi-lockdown in Taiwan last year, so I volunteered to be the apprentice and learned how to cook authentic French family cuisine with Pierre. It was super fun!

Some preparation before making the soup of butternut squash |
|
The soup of butternut squash is composed of butternut squash, potatoes and carrots. We chopped them into pieces, steamed them with a pressure cooker, and scattered them with a mixer. With some spices, the hot and delicious squash soup can be served!
|
|
Left (top): soup of butternut squash (it’s rarely seen in Taiwan, but it tasted like pumpkin soup. Very good!)
Right (top): meatballs (not really my type)
Left (down): homemade apple pie by Pierre. I signed up for the apple pie workshop right after the first bite
Right (down): canard with potatoes
|
|
I brought my selfie stick and continued my passion of taking pictures at every moment. |
|
Left (top): some sort of salad
Right (top): St Moret Cheese. It tastes like the cream cheese that we can find in the bagel. To be honest, I couldn’t get used to the French cheese this time, but this St Moret was just right for me! Having bread with St Moret is awesome. But to Pierre who’s serious about “real cheese”, St Moret isn’t authentic at all haha
Left (down): Lyonnais pistachio sausage with onion and potatoes
Right (down): natural walnuts. We used a tool to break the shells down and get the fruits out
|
|
One dinner, Pierre made a potato omelet. It was simple but super good! I even asked if I can reserve the remaining piece for the breakfast next day haha Left bottom: I really have a big stomach and an appetite for breakfast!
|
|
Left: French white sausage (Boudin blanc). Boudin usually mean blood sausage, but boudin blanc doesn’t contain animal’s blood, so it has a pale color. It tastes like hot dog, but not my type either haha Right: French lunch usually commences with a fresh salad
|
|
Top: baked potato and fish in tomato sauce. The oven dishes are very common in European cuisine, but not so much in Asia. I miss them a lot!
Left (bottom): Lyon’s specialty “brioches aux pralines roses”. People having a sweet tooth will love it (like me)! You can buy them from most bakery in Lyon, but the most famous specialty store for praline products is called Boutique Pralus. You may want to give it a try if you ever go to Lyon.
Right (bottom): the pandan cake I bought from Singapore. The French love it so much because of its light cake body, pandan fragrance and little sweetness. The most famous pandan cake store in Singapore is Bengawan Solo. They have branches in the airport, so you can see a lot of tourists bring their bag while heading home or next destination.
|
|
This starter was “magnifique”! The base is a kind of cheese from Provence, called Brousse. Although it’s cheese, it only has faint fragrance; it tastes more like souffle omelet when mixed with eggs. Tres bon!
Bottom: baked butternut squash and carrots with a variety of spices. The recipe is from the eldest son of Pierre and Bernadette, Damien.
|
|
Finally it’s my show time! This is how I made the natural apple pie: put the made ready pie on the baking plate, placed the sliced apple on the pie, spread a lot of sugar on it and put it in the oven. Voila! The delicious apple pie was ready! It was my first time making an apple pie, and I enjoyed the process so much. Hope I can bake it again in Singapore and Taiwan soon.

Me and my cooking prof Pierre. Successfully graduated from “Institute of Pierre” after learning a few dishes haha |
|
Last night in Lyon, we had dinner with Alex. While we were having dessert, two friends from Ivory Coast came to show their gratitude to Pierre, so we invited them to enjoy dessert with us and have some cultural exchange. On the table was the North African dessert Makroud made by Alex’s boyfriend. That is very special

👉台灣味 「Ben’s Bowl」Let’s enjoy Taiwanese food at Ben’s Bowl!
I learned about this Taiwanese restaurant thanks to a Taiwanese YouTuber Chef Chouchou. He came to France to learn cooking in the beginning and then worked in French restaurants. However, he’s not so into staying whole day in the kitchen. Instead, he is more interested in sharing both Taiwanese and French cuisine to a broader audience, so he pivoted his career to a full-time Youtuber path. I enjoy watching his videos, such as the theme of cooking or his life in Lyon/France with which I can get a sense of the life in France. He has his own humorous style, while sometimes quite cynical.
Ben’s Bowl is run by Chef Chou’s friend “Xiao Tong Zhie”, also a Taiwanese. She seems to be a chef or a pâtissier and has been living in France for a long time. She bought a traditional bouchon Lyonnais before the pandemic and transformed it to a Taiwanese restaurant to serve authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The mains, dessert and drinks are all highly rated on Google. My cooking skills were so poor that I didn’t want to embarrass myself by preparing a meal, but I was glad that I could still bring Pierre, Bernadette and Alex to a good Taiwanese restaurant.
If you want to know more about the story behind Ben’s Bowl, you can watch Chef Chouchou’s video here.
|
There are two floors in the restaurant. The decoration was simple but cozy. Several books written in Mandarin were displayed on the shelf, rendering an East-Asian atmosphere. The menu is available in both Mandarin and French, and the waitress is also bilingual.
|
|
Each of us ordered a main dish: Pierre and Alex had Japanese tonkatsu
(though we were in a Taiwanese restaurant), Bernadette got BBQ pork, and I ate
braised minced pork rice (Lu rou fan). We also shared Taiwan’s signature salt
crispy chicken (Yan su ji) and Japanese wakame. Lu rou fan was so tasty that I
felt I was eating the one from one of my favorite restaurants Wan Lin in
Taiwan. I was quite frustrated by Singapore’s so-called Taiwanese Lu rou fan
which was too fat and sweet, but this one really surprised me and exceeded my
expectation.
|
很開心和轟爸轟媽及Alex一起在里昂品嘗台灣料理 🙂 So happy to enjoy Taiwanese cuisine in Lyon with them ✌ |
Deuxième tour de l’election présidentielle 2022 / Second round of French presidential election of 2022
On my third day in France (April 24), I ran into the most important
day out of every five years in the French political arena – Second round of the French presidential election. The first round took place on April 10. While no
candidate won the absolute majority (50% vote), two candidates who received the
highest number of votes, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen entered the second
round which would take place two weeks later.
|
Watching the election result with champaign! |
On the evening of second round, we came to the house of Pierre and
Bernadette’s friends, getting ready to celebrate the “lost battle of Marine Le
Pen”. Over the past five years, French people were not satisfied at all with
Macron’s policy in favor of the rich, as evidenced by the Yellow Vest Protest.
However, Marine Le Pen’s far-right vision was considered even worse, such as
anti-immigration, nationalism and trade protectionism. Therefore, though many
people did not like Macron, they still voted to express strong opposition to Le
Pen.
|
Before the announcement of the result, everyone had to forecast the winning ratio. To be honest, I wasn’t really paying attention to French politics before coming, so I just randomly guess 60% vs 40%. It turned out that my guess was the closest! Macron won the victory with 58.54% against Le Pen’s 41.46%. They were all joking that they were going to contact me again in 5 years for the next presidential result forecast. However, Le Pen’s support rate increased 7.5% compared to five years ago, demonstrating a huge alarm to both Macron and French people.
|
|
Time for dessert! On the right side was the Padan cake. I love this cake so much, but I didn’t expect that the French would also fall in love with it!
|
|
As usual, selfie is a must! |
Retrouvaille avec des filles de Lyon 3 / Gathering with friends from University of Jean Moulin
During my exchange period, I took all the courses in French to
improve my language, which meant most of my classmates were all French students
from their law and political department. I met two girls Chloé and Julie in class
(girls on the front). They were very busy with their school schedule at that
time, but they still spent some time talking to me during the break. Thanks to
their detailed note, I had an easier time preparing for the exam! I was so happy
that they live in / not far away from Lyon, so I could still meet them after
six years! When they heard that I was pursuing a master degree, they all had
the same surprised expression: still studying?
|
The restaurant is called IODÉ, selling seafood dishes. I had a feeling that I came here six years ago. I got a set menu, including salad, main dish (salmon and tuna with rice), and raspberry sorbet for dessert. Overall, it was just fine; can try other restaurants in the future!
|
|
The most important thing is to gather together with friends! |
Rooftop / Rooftop tour in Lyon
|
One evening, I took a walk with Alex and Bernadette. Bernadette
brought us to two new rooftops in Lyon. The first one is a rooftop of Westfield
La Part-Dieu shopping mall. The mall changed its name and underwent several
renovations, becoming more energetic and dynamic. Six years ago, the rooftop was
not yet opened, while now it has several exotic cuisines and open space for
relaxation. The bottom right is the Auditorium Orchestre National de Lyon. I like
its cutting-edge design!
Before heading to the second rooftop, we came to the high-end market
named after “Chef of the Century” Paul Bocuse, Les Halles de Lyon
Paul Bocuse. Bernadette showed me around and explained some cheese, ham, bread, and dessert types. However, normally people would not do grocery shopping in this
market because the food and ingredients here are much more expensive (but of
course better quality).
|
At a bakery, Bernadette treated us Oreillettes, a traditional Lyonnais dessert. The cookie is fried and topped with lemon icing. The texture is crunchy and a little sweetened. It’s the kind of sweets that I can eat often! I am fond of going to bakeries or patisseries in every country. Even if I didn’t buy it, I enjoyed appreciating the color and shape of the dessert.
|
|
(Radisson Blu Hotel Lyon)
The second rooftop, called suspending garden, is on top of Les Halles’ parking lot. There are several tables and chairs for people to do picnic; I bet many working people nearby would come have lunch here and enjoy the sunshine. Next to it was the famous pencil building “Radisson Blu Hotel Lyon”.
|
|
On our way back, we encountered the University of Jean Moulin, the starting point of my connection with France. Bernadette said it’s “bel souvenir (beautiful memory)” of me and Alex.

🏡Tony Garnier Urban Museum/Musée urbain Tony Garnier
In 1917, the mayor of Lyon Edouard Herriot planned to build an area of social housing that was comfortable and affordable for workers at the factories located between La Guillotière and Vénissieux. He invited Tony Garnier, an architect who had won international architecture awards to design and coordinate the construction. The construction started in 1920 and the first lodgings completed in 1933, called “la cité Tony Garnier”.
Tony Garnier designed social housing, as well as Edouard Herriot hospital, the slaughterhouses, covered market, Gerland football stadium; all included in his plans for a Socialist Industrial City. In 1988, the artists of Citécréation® began to design and create 19 huge wall paintings based on Tony Garnier’s work and blueprint. Another 6 wall paintings were sponsored by UNESCO, designed by artists from around the world, representing their vision of the ideal city: the Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, the United States, India, Mexico and Russia.
For further info, please refer to Tony Garnier Urban Museum website.
Besides the wall paintings, the museum preserved a “show home” apartment from the 1930s for visitors to have a sense of social housing. The wooden-floored flat consisted of two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a basic washroom. The flat was plain but cozy, accommodating 3 to 4 people. Though the flat was not big, the architect still left a relatively spacious area for the dining table and the kitchen, showing the importance of social gathering and dining in France.
|
There were some exhibitions about the French way of life, culture and trend in different phases of France in the Tony Garnier Museum. |
|
Fun fact: La cité Tony Garnier is located in Lyon’s 8th district “the United States District”. I found that after the outbreak of World War I in 1917, Lyon decided to name the main boulevard of 8th district after their American ally, that is the boulevard of the United States. Later on, this district was naturally called the United States District.
|
|
There are many wall paintings all around Lyon in city center or old town. The Tony Garnier wall paintings are the densest and most systematic ones.

Notes on my retour en France
My week in Lyon was like a holiday back home. I got away from it all and did the social media detox. Every day I spoke French, had good food, took a walk in the afternoon and slept well at night. I fully recharged my batteries during this long stay. Thanks to my French family, best friend and good memories, Lyon is one of the most beautiful city to me. Hope I can return to Lyon soon!
